Why is this medication prescribed?
Avodart (Dutasteride) is used to treat an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or ,BPH).
This is when the prostate is enlarged in men and causes urinating problems.
Dutasteride (the active ingredient in Avodart) is similar to Finasteride (the active
ingredient in Propecia and Proscar) with the way that it inhibits DHT.
It works by blocking the production of a
natural substance that enlarges the prostate. This shrinks the enlarged prostate over time and brings relief
from the symptoms commonly associated with BPH. Avodart (Dutasteride) has also been
shown to have beneficial effects on hairloss.
How should this medicine be used?
It is usually
taken once a day with or without food. Take Avodart (Dutasteride) exactly as directed. Do not take
more or less than prescribed by your doctor. Take each dose with a full glass of water
and swallow the capsules whole. Do not chew, split crush or split the capsules.
What side effects can this medication cause?
The most common side effects of Avodart (Dutasteride) include:
- impotence (trouble getting or keeping an erection)
- a decrease in sex drive (libido)
- breast enlargement or tenderness (gynecomastia)
- a decrease in the amount of semen released during sex.
- inability to have or maintain an erection
- difficulty ejaculating
These side effects usually disappear or decrease with continued use of Avodart (Dutasteride), or stopping taking Avodart (Dutasteride) altogether.
